What Is A Rhinoplasty?

It’s hard to get away from your nose. Every morning, there it is looking right back at you in the mirror. Many people have hated the shape of their nose since they were teenagers. Others have had their nose injured, so now it is crooked or otherwise damaged. Nose surgery, clinically known as rhinoplasty, can correct orchange your nose so you like what you see every morning.

Rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as Nose Surgery or a Nose Job, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures and has been for a long time. Whether the changes are subtle or more extensive, nose surgery can reshape, reduce, or augment your nose to bring it more in line with the rest of your face, and to boost your self-confidence.

Nose surgery may be purely cosmetic, or it can be functional. Some rhinoplasty has the goal of repairing nose defects or damage, or correcting breathing problems.

Injury Or Breathing Problems

Open Vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

Dr. Ferraro uses either open or closed rhinoplasty methods, depending on your situation. In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made within the nostrils. In the open method, the incision is made across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils. The soft tissue is then pulled up and off of the underlying structures.

The goal is to access the bone and cartilage beneath the soft tissue. Dr. Ferraro can then shave a bump off or otherwise reshape the bone and cartilage. Sometimes additional cartilage or material is needed to build up an area. This can be taken from the septum, ears, and ribs. Also, silastic implants can be used. If the nose is to be made smaller, the nasal bones will be fractured.

Is Rhinoplasty Safe?

Is Nose Surgery Painful?

This isn’t an overly painful recovery. It’s more a question of discomfort due to having to sleep upright, being careful not to bump or put any weight on your new nose and swelling. Swelling can come and go for months, especially at night. Most of the pain involved will resolve within the first few days.

Cost of Rhinoplasty

The cost of rhinoplasty with Dr. Ferraro depends on your unique situation. Costs can vary depending upon your goals for your surgery. For instance, building up an overly small nose is more difficult than decreasing the size of an overly large nose, so the costs of the two procedures could vary.

During your consultation, when Dr. Ferraro has a chance to examine your nose and to hear your goals, we can give you an estimate of the cost of your unique procedure.

Does Insurance Cover Rhinoplasty?

If your nose surgery, whether rhinoplasty or septoplasty (to adjust the septum, the wall inside your nose that divides the nasal passages into a right and left side), is primarily intended to correct issues with function, then insurance is likely to cover the procedure. Of course, some cosmetic adjustments can be made at the same time as structural improvements.

If your rhinoplasty is strictly cosmetic, insurance will treat it as an elective surgery and will not provide coverage.
