After Weight-Loss Surgery

Losing a great deal of weight is a great accomplishment, whether you did it on your own or through bariatric surgery. Your joints, your heart, your organs —every part of your body works better when you’re at or near your ideal weight. Plus, the change in your self-esteem and outlook on life can be incredible.

Now if your skin would get with the program.

When you lose large amounts of weight, particularly if you’ve held the weight for a long period of time, usually your skin cannot return to the tautness that it had before you put on the weight. How can this be, isn’t skin ultimately elastic? While elastin in the connective tissue of your skin does make the skin rebound and feel malleable, it can only stretch so far. Think of a rubber band that has been stretched for a period of time. Once the skin is overstretched for too long, it cannot rebound, and you are left with hanging skin that doesn’t match your new slimmer contour. And it won’t...without help.

That’s where various body-contouring procedures with Dr. Ferraro come in. The goal is to complete the weight-loss process and have your skin and tissue match your new slimmer contour.

Various Procedures

A variety of procedures offered by Dr. Ferraro target all the areas where loose hanging skin is an issue. Obviously, the most involved of these is the body lift, which targets the lower torso and upper legs, re-sculpting the abdomen, hips, back, buttocks, and outer thighs.

But you may also have hanging skin on the breasts, arms, and face that you seek to address.

These are various procedures that may come into play after weight-loss surgery or extreme weight loss:

  • Body lift
  • Tummy tuck
  • Liposuction
  • Thigh lift
  • Buttock lift
  • Arm lift
  • Breast lift
  • Facelift

Not For Additional Weight Loss

It’s important to note, however, that all of these body-contouring procedures are not for weight loss. If you’re still losing weight, pockets of sagging skin can again develop after your surgeries. Plus, if you gain weight back, this will put pressure on your sensitive skin, leading to stretch marks and large scars. It’s important that you’re not only at a stable weight, but also dedicated to maintaining that weight for the duration through the necessary changes in your lifestyle.

Combining Surgeries

As with any surgery at our practice, you’ll first have a consultation with Dr. Ferraro. Together you’ll discuss your goals, issues, and what can be done. Various procedures may be able to be combined into a single surgery. If this is the case, although your recovery will be more involved, you will only have a single recovery instead of multiple recoveries with accumulating downtime.
