Nipple Sparing Mastectomy

In breast cancer reconstruction, Dr. Ferraro works closely with the breast surgeon to achieve the best results. One technique which is controversial is the nipple sparing mastectomy. Patients need to understand the risks and benefits of this approach.

The nipple sparing mastectomy can be used in breast cancer reconstruction but the benefits are:

1. Better cosmetic outcome. Although Dr. Ferraro can reconstruct the nipple areolar complex it is never exactly like the natural body.

Risks tend to be:

1. Higher recurrence rate. This means that that if the nipple and areola are not removed during the mastectomy then there is a chance the tumor will recur. Pateints must undertsand this risk and therefore the nipple sparing mastectomy may be more appropriate for a prophylactic mastectomy.
