Rhinoplasty recovery can feel like a waiting game, especially when swelling keeps you from seeing your new nose right away. Knowing what typically happens each week can make it easier to plan time away from work, social activities, and exercise while your nose heals.
At Plastic Surgery Specialists of New Jersey in Bergen County, NJ, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frank J. Ferraro has practiced plastic surgery in Bergen County for over 26 years. His experience in cosmetic surgery of the face and body helps guide you through rhinoplasty and the recovery that follows.
What Does Rhinoplasty Recovery Look Like Week by Week?
Your nose continues to change throughout recovery, with the most noticeable healing happening during the first several weeks. Here is a general idea of what you can expect:
- Week 1: Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are usually most noticeable during this stage. Keep your head elevated, use cold compresses as directed, and give yourself plenty of time to rest. Your nasal splint is generally removed after about one week.
- Week 2: Bruising and swelling should continue to improve, with much of the initial swelling typically settling within 10 to 14 days. You may feel increasingly comfortable returning to your usual daily routine, while still protecting your nose.
- Weeks 3 to 4: Your nose may begin looking more defined as swelling gradually decreases. With Dr. Ferraro’s approval, you may be able to resume gentle, non-impact activities such as swimming or bicycling around this point.
- Weeks 5 to 6: Healing continues beneath the surface, even as you begin feeling much more like yourself. Around six weeks, you may be cleared to return to most exercise, though activities that could impact your nose may still need to wait.
- Following Months: Subtle swelling can linger and may fluctuate as your nose continues settling into its new shape. Final rhinoplasty results can take several months to become fully apparent.
