Getting the Most Out of Liposuction

Body contouring via liposuction continues to grow in popularity. In fact, liposuction is performed a staggering 500,000 times in the United States each year, according to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. And no wonder – liposuction effectively reshapes one or more areas of your body that have not responded well to diet and exercise, helping you to achieve your aesthetic goals. To truly reap the benefits of liposuction, however, there are some things to keep in mind to put you on the road to a safe recovery and a newer you.

Follow Your Doctor’s Orders
Liposuction is a serious surgery, so make sure you listen to your doctor’s after-care instructions. This is also a good time to ask any questions that can aid you in healing properly and problem-free.

Keep the Pressure On
Wearing compression garments is the best way to help reduce swelling and bruising, as well as improve circulation and promote healing. Your doctor will apply bandages after your procedure, but you may need to purchase compression garments on your own ahead of time.

Get Plenty of Rest
Your recovery time will typically last two to three days before you can return to work. During this time, it’s important that you give yourself ample time to rest and recover. It’s a good idea to prepare your recovery area before your surgery with fresh linens and items you use frequently at your bedside. If you have children, arrange for a friend or relative to care for them while you get the rest you need.

Manage Your Pain
Over-the-counter medicines like Ibuprofen or Aleve can effectively help you manage any discomfort you may have post-surgery. They also help with swelling. Your doctor will also prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection. Be sure to take your antibiotic for the entire course of the prescription to avoid complications.

Start Moving When Possible
Gentle movement can help reduce the risk of potentially fatal blood clots, so start walking at a slow pace as soon as possible in order to help your body to heal faster. However, it’s best to refrain from strenuous activity for about a month after surgery.
